Capturing Wave Energy For Our Daily Use
There are many different types of energy. Some are so common that we see and use them daily, while some others are just so out of the world that you can never imagine how they happen to be like that. Well, talking about wave energy; thats the case. Not really for those who know, but to those who dont, and the latter is the majority as we are well aware of.
Just like all other sources of energy like wind, biofuel, biomass, hydro power, geothermal energy, solar energy, tidal energy, and wind energy, wave energy is also one of the most efficient renewable energies. But not many people are even aware that such a thing exists.
To make things simple, lets look at the definition of wave energy. It is actually the energy that is captured from the ocean surface waves, and later making use of it for all kinds of purposes, primarily to produce electricity, desalination, and water pump systems at reservoirs.
Most of the times wave energy is taken from natural water sources, such as rivers and oceans, but nowadays there are also experimental sites which can generate these wave movements and capture the energy produced. We know that water waves are naturally extremely powerful, and this part of capturing is not even about one fifth of it. Wave power is calculated through the height, speed, wavelength, and density of the waves.
How It Is Done? The best places so far known for wave energy capturing would be in the north and south temperate zones. The continuous westerlies in these areas blow strongest during the winter. They are captured by means of very simple ways. Floating or shoreside devices will capture the energy and convert them to electricity. In some very highly advanced sites, they are even able to produce hydrogen and desalinated straightaway. Why Is It Good? Unlike other sources of energy, this wave energy is something that possible never ends, just like solar energy. There are widespread resources available, and it is done at large scales. Its always readily scalable, and can be harnessed anytime you want. And the best part of it is that, since it directly comes from the nature, you dont have to build huge places like dams. In that sense, it saves a lot of money, and in turn it gives a very promising economy. And not to forget, it doesnt harm the environment at all!
